1 Inch Castle Nut Description

Castle nuts are a different fastener altogether. Castle nuts visually look more like a hex nut and host protruding triangular portions, where as a slotted nut (pictured to the right), looks as though a hex nut has been cut with the slots and corners forming part of the protrusion. This is a slotted nut.

Castle nuts are nuts that look like crowns or parapets of mid evil castles. These nuts are used together with a bolt and a cotter pin to create a secure nut in place so that it cannot be tightened or loosened

The difference between a slotted nut and a castle nut is the latter has turret geometry on the top of the nut. The nut thicknesses are the same as a slotted nut. Like slotted nuts, castle nut applications are similar using steel pins and taper or split pins, to lock the nut into position after tightening.

Hex castle nut have a grooved head allowing a cotter pin through the nut and into a hole in a bolt shank. Thus preventing the nut from slipping off the attached bolt. Often used in machinery, shafts and automotive applications.
